Here @ L’Abri we believe in experiential or active learning and strive to make our programs and activities both educational and fun. Our programs are based on the premise that much of what is learned is constructed through learners own active participation in the learning task and through personal experience. Experiential and active learning can best be described as learning by living through problems and challenges. After each activity our instructors take time to reflect the challenges learners faced and give input on adjusted behaviour or values.
L’Abri Adventure Camp
We are a small adventure camp that can accommodate max 100 learners. Getting to know you is our biggest priority. L’Abri Adventure Camp isn’t just about outdoor fun, it’s about you! We want you to discover your best self, and we believe that the great outdoors is just the way to do it!
Things to know about our facilitation
The Mohawk Walk is series of foot cables strung between trees and poles, typically in a zig-zag pattern. The object is to get the entire group from the first tree to the last without touching the ground, and without the aid of foreign objects (sticks, rope, etc).
Our climbing wall is an artificially constructed wall with grips for hands and feet. We have an indoor climbing wall in the barn and an outdoor climbing wall that forms part of our Obstacle Course.
The Postman’s Walk is a series of cables strung over the uMshwathi River. The objective is to get the entire group over the cliff to the other side and return via via the Scout Bridge over the river back to staring point.
Trust Fall is conducted as a group activity where members of the group deliberately allow themselves to fall, relying on the other members of the group (spotters) to catch the person.
The L’Abri hiking trail is a two hour route march to Camp SKABA starting at our base camp. Crossing the uMshwathi River with a stopover at the Boulder Falls You will swim in natural pools. You will then continue your hike under the canopy of the indigenous forest and will arrive at Camp SKABA approximately 45 minutes later where you will build your own shelter to overnight under the stars.
Tug of War
Digging in your feet and all pulling together teams attempt to break the L’Abri speed record for pulling our old Landini tractor over a distance of 70 meters!
